1 1/2 c. applesauce
1/2 c. shortening
1 1/2 c. sugar (may use less)
2 eggs, beaten
1 1/2 tsp. baking soda
1/2 tsp. salt
2 c. flour
2 tbsp. unsweetened cocoa
1/2 tsp. cinnamon
1/2 tsp. cloves
1/2 tsp. allspice
1/2 tsp. nutmeg
3/4 c. dates, chopped
3/4 c. raisins
1/2 c. chopped nuts, if desired

Cream shortening and sugar; add beaten egg. Add applesauce. Sift flour, salt, baking soda, cocoa and spices together and add to mixture. Add dates, raisins and nuts. Bake in 2 greased and floured loaf pans at 350 degrees for 1 hour
