CARAMEL FROSTED BARS 
1 1/2 sticks butter, softened
1 1/2 c. sugar
2 eggs
1 1/2 tsp. vanilla
1 1/2 c. flour
1 tsp. baking soda
1 tsp. salt
1/4 c. chopped nuts, opt.

Cream together butter and sugar until light and fluffy. Beat in eggs and vanilla. Mix dry ingredients and add to creamed mixture. Mix well. Spread in 13 x 9 inch ungreased pan. Bake in 375 degree oven for 15 to 20 minutes. Cool slightly.

PREPARE CARAMEL FROSTING:

In small saucepan, combine: 1/3 c. brown sugar 1 tbsp. water

Bring to a full boil; remove from heat. Add 1 teaspoon vanilla; gradually stir in 1 cup confectioners' sugar. (Add a few drops hot water if too thick.) Spread immediately on baked layer; sprinkle with 2 tablespoons chopped nuts.
