BURNT SUGAR CAKE 
3/4 c. water
1 1/2 c. sugar
2 1/4 c. flour
1 c. milk
2 eggs, separated
3/4 c. butter
1 tsp. baking powder
1 scant tsp. baking soda
Little salt
1 tsp. vanilla

Burn the 1/2 cup sugar in an iron skillet and add the 3/4 cup water and stir until it melts. Set off to cool. Sift dry ingredients. Cream butter, add sugar a little at a time, cream well each time. Add beaten egg yolks, stir, then add the burnt sugar. Then add flour and milk alternately. Carefully fold in beaten egg whites. Add vanilla. Pour into waxed paper lined layer pans (2). Bake at 350 degrees for 20-25 minutes.

CARAMEL ICING FOR BURNT SUGAR CAKE:

1 box (lb.) brown sugar
1 sm. can Carnation milk
1 lg. lump butter

Cook until it barely forms a soft ball. Beat and spread on cake.
