BREAD AND BUTTER PICKLES 
4 qts. fresh sm. cucumbers
8 onions, sliced thin
2 red or green (hot or sweet) peppers
1/2 c. salt

SYRUP:

5 c. sugar
5 c. vinegar
1 1/2 tsp. turmeric
1/2 tsp. ground cloves
2 tsp. celery seed
2 tbsp. mustard seed (put celery & mustard seed in cheese cloth)

Mix salt in vegetables and mix with cracked ice, cover with weighted lid and let stand 3 hours. Drain thoroughly and add to syrup.

SYRUP: Heat syrup thoroughly, stirring occasionally. Do not boil. Pack in jars, seal hot. Makes about 8 pints.
