BEANS WITH MEAT AND CHILI 
2 c. pink or pinto beans
2 lg. onions, sliced
2 cloves garlic, minced
2 tsp. salt
1/2 lb. fresh pork
1/2 lb. boneless beef stew meat
1/2 tsp. baking soda
1 can tomato sauce
1 can water
Chili powder up to 2 tbsp. (to your taste)

Soak beans overnight in water to cover; drain. Cover with plenty of fresh water. Add soda. Boil 15 minutes. Drain. Cover with plenty of fresh water. Add 1 onion, 1 cup garlic, 1 teaspoon salt. Cook slowly.

Dice pork fine. Put in skillet with 1 teaspoon shortening and brown. Cut beef into cubes. Add other ingredients and garlic. Cook until tender. Add tomato sauce, water, salt, and pepper to taste and red chili powder. Cook 5 minutes. Add to beans. Cook all slowly about 2 1/2 hours. (Pink beans get mushy, pintos don't.)
