APPLESAUCE BARS 
1/2 c. shortening
2 c. sugar
1 tsp. salt
3 eggs
2 c. unsweetened applesauce
4 tsp. baking soda
1 tsp. cinnamon and cloves
2 c. flour
1 c. chopped nuts
1 c. raisins, if desired

Cream together shortening, sugar, salt and eggs. Combine applesauce and soda. Add to shortening mixture, then add all dry ingredients except nuts and raisins. Mix well. Add nuts and raisins. Spread batter in 10 x 13 pan (jelly roll pan.) Bake 35 to 40 minutes in 325 to 350 degree oven. When cool frost with penuche frosting.

PENUCHE FROSTING:

1/2 c. butter
1 c. brown sugar
1/4 c. milk
1 3/4 to 2 c. powdered sugar

Melt butter in saucepan. Stir in brown sugar. Boil and stir over low heat for 2 minutes. Stir in milk. Bring to boil, stirring constantly. Cool. Gradually add powdered sugar. Stir until thick enough to spread. 3 dozen.
