HILMA'S BRUNA BONAR (SWEDISH
CHRISTMAS BROWN BEANS)
 
2 c. brown beans (kidney beans)
1 tbsp. butter
2 tbsp. vinegar
1/4 c. brown sugar

Wash beans and put on to boil in cold water. Simmer until tender (about 3 hours), adding more water if necessary. When done, add rest of ingredients- serve hot. These may be thickened slightly if so desired. A favorite Christmas Eve or Smorgasbord dish among Swedish people.

These are äkta svenska bönor, and just as boring! As I experienced them in Stockholm. My grandmother, who came from Southern Sweden/Denmark always put some cinnamon stick and salt pork.
