MOM'S DONUTS 
1 c. sugar
1 egg
5 tsp. melted butter
1 c. milk
2 tsp. cream of tartar
1 tsp. baking soda
1 tsp. salt
Vanilla
4 1/2 c. flour plus (enough to roll)

Beat egg and sugar together. Add milk and cooled butter. Add dry ingredients. Mix well.

On a lightly floured surface, roll dough 3/8 inch thick and cut with a floured doughnut cutter. Let stand 15 minutes. Fry in deep hot fat (375 degrees) until brown, turning once. Drain on paper towels.
