Prepare about 1 1/2 hours before serving.
1. Prepare package pie crust mix as label directs. Roll 1/8" thick. With pastry wheel cut out 3 (7") squares, 6 strips (6" long x 3/4" wide), and 3 (1") circles. Re-rolling dough as needed. Start heating oven to 350 degrees.
2. Wash, pare, and core 3 medium baking apples. Place one on each of the 7" squares. Turn all 4 points of dough up to top of each apple, forming 4" "ears". Press edges lightly together. Now over each dumpling, lay 2 strips of dough crosswise, then top with a pastry circle.
3. Brush dumplings with one beaten egg, then place in medium size shallow baking dish. In a small saucepan, combine 1/2 cup caramel sauce (from jar), 2 tablespoons butter, 1/3 cup dark brown sugar and 3/4 cup water. Bring to a boil while stirring, then pour over apples. Bake 40 minutes or until apples are just tender, spooning caramel sauce over them occasionally.
4. Just before serving, sprinkle 1/4 cup canned toasted slivered almonds over dumplings. Serves 3.
