2 c. sugar
2 c. water

6 apples
2 c. flour
1 tsp. salt
2 tsp. baking powder
3/4 c. shortening
1/2 c. milk

Sugar to sprinkle

Preheat oven to 350 degrees. For sauce combine sugar, water and cinnamon. Cook 5 minutes. Remove from heat. Add butter and mix. Set aside. Pare and core apples. Sift flour, salt and baking powder together. Cut in shortening. Add milk all at once. Stir just until flour is moistened. Roll 1/4 inch thick, cut into 6 inch squares. Place 1 apple on each square. Sprinkle apple, especially center, generously with cinnamon and sugar mixed together. Dot center with butter. Fold 4 corners of square together. Repeat with other apples. Place 1 inch apart in a greased baking pan. Pour sauce over dumplings. Bake about 35 minutes or until dumplings are golden. Serve hot with cream or cool and refrigerate, which allows the sauce to thicken.
