RED WALDORF CAKE AND FROSTING 
1/2 c. shortening
1 1/2 c. sugar
2 eggs
1 tsp. vanilla
1 oz. red food coloring
1 tsp. vinegar
2 1/2 c. flour
1 tsp. baking soda
1 c. buttermilk

Cream shortening; add sugar gradually. Add eggs and beat. Add vanilla, vinegar and red food coloring; mix. Add flour and soda alternately with buttermilk. Bake at 350 degrees for 30-45 minutes in a greased and floured pan.

FROSTING:

In a saucepan, cook 1 cup milk and 3 tablespoons flour until it forms a paste. Cool (very important). Cream a stick of butter and 1/2 cup shortening. Whip well and add 1 cup confectioners' sugar and 1 teaspoon vanilla or almond flavoring. Add paste and whip.
