LAPSKAUS FROM HAMBURG 
1 lb. smoked ham, cut into cubes
3 c. water
8 c. potatoes, peeled and cut into 1-inch cubs
3 carrots, peeled, cut into 1-inch pieces
3 ribs celery, cut into 1-inch pieces
1 rutabaga, peeled and cut into 1-inch cubes
1 leek, split, washed and thinly sliced
1/4 tsp. salt
1/4 tsp. black pepper

In a 6-quart pan, combine the ham with 1 cup of the water, potatoes, carrots, celery and rutabaga. Simmer for 20 minutes. Add the leeks, salt, pepper; simmer for 10 minutes.
