GUMDROP GEMS 
1 c. shortening
3/4 tsp. vanilla
1/2 c. sugar
1/2 c. packed brown sugar
2 eggs, beaten
2 c. sifted all purpose flour
1/2 tbsp. baking soda
1/2 tbsp. salt
1 1/2 c. uncooked rolled oats, quick or old fashioned
48 small gumdrops

Cream shortening with vanilla. Add sugars gradually, creaming well. Add eggs and beat thoroughly. Sift flour, baking soda, and salt together; add to creamed mixture and mix well. Stir in oats. Shape dough into balls and put in greased cookie sheet. Make a depression in each ball and place a gumdrop in each hollow. Bake at 375 degrees for 10-12 minutes. Makes 4 dozen.
