APPLE PAN DOWDY 
Bread slices (enough for 2 layers in the baking dish)
Apple slices (enough to cover bread slices)
Grated nutmeg to taste
1/2 c. water
1/2 c. molasses

Preheat oven to 325 degrees. Butter a baking dish and line the bottom and sides with well-buttered slices of bread. Fill the dish with sliced apples and grated nutmeg over them. Mix 1/2 cup water and 1/2 cup molasses together and pour over apples. cover this with more slices of buttered bread.

Put a tin plate over the baking dish and bake in moderate 325 degree oven for about 2 hours. When it is done, loosen around edges with a knife and turn out into a dish. Serve hot with sugar and cream.
