WHITE LOAF BREAD
2 1/4 c. milk
1/2 c. lukewarm water
2 pkg. or cakes yeast
9 c. all purpose or bread flour
4 tbsp. sugar
4 tsp. salt
2 tbsp. Crisco

Soften yeast in water. Scald milk, pour over sugar, salt and Crisco. Cool to lukewarm and add to yeast mixture. Add flour, except about 1 cup, and mix thoroughly. Add more flour, if needed. Turn out on lightly floured board and knead until smooth and elastic. Shape into ball and place in lightly greased bowl. Grease top of dough lightly. Cover and let rise in warm dark place until doubled in size. Punch down; let rise again until doubled. Divide dough into 3 equal parts. Shape each piece into a ball and let rest 10 minutes, covered. Shape into loaves and put in greased 1 pound loaf pans. Let rise to doubled. Preheat oven to 400 degrees and bake about 45 or 50 minutes. Remove loaves to cool on rack. Do not cover while still warm.

Makes 3 loaves.
