AUNT ELVIRA'S SPONGE CAKE 
4 eggs
1 c. sugar
4 tbsp. cold water
2 tsp. vanilla
1 c. flour
1 1/2 tsp. baking powder
1 1/2 tsp. cornstarch

CREAM FILLING:

1 1/2 c. milk (hot)
1 c. sugar
3 tbsp. flour
3 eggs, beaten
1 tsp. vanilla

Separate 4 eggs. Beat yolks 2 to 3 minutes. Add sugar and beat. Add water, vanilla, flour, baking powder, and cornstarch. Beat egg whites until stiff. Fold into first mixture. Grease cake pan. Bake at 350 degrees for 45 minutes.

Filling: Heat milk. Stir in sugar, flour, eggs, and vanilla. Stir over low heat until thickened. Cool. When cake is cooled (10 minutes); tip over onto dish. Cut in half in order to put filling in. Return top of cake and sprinkle with powdered sugar.
