DATE AND NUT CAKE 
1 c. dates cut up in a bowl
1 tsp. baking soda, shake over dates

Add one cup boiling water, stir once, and then let stand until cool.

1 c. sugar
1/2 c. shortening
1 egg
1 1/2 c. flour
1/2 c. nut meats chopped
1 tsp. vanilla

Cream shortening and sugar, then add egg. Then add to dates, flour and nut meats.

Bake two tins of flat. Moderate oven until done. Frost.
