CHEERIOS TREATS (AN ALTERNATIVE
TO RICE KRISPIES)

This is a "healthier" alternative to the "Rice Krispie Treats". The kids will love these!

1/4 cup (1/2 stick) butter
8 cups Cheerios
1 (10 oz.) bag marshmallows

In large saucepan, melt butter. Add marshmallows and stir until melted and blended with the butter.

Remove from heat and add Cheerios. Mix until evenly coated.

Scoop into 13x9x2-inch greased pan. Cool for an hour or two, cut into small squares and enjoy!

I want to make these, but don't know what to use to grease the pan. Also, how much grease? Lastly, can the treats be wrapped to keep them fresh? Thanks.

 Lisa (Yukon Territory) replies:
"grease" as in use non-stick cooking spray (e.g. PAM).

For all u critical moms... Just sayin' that my son loved this and obviously children don't necessarily like "healthy" stuff all the time... I gotta say this is one of MY favorite recipes.

 Jessie (Minnesota) says:
If you make this with Kay's Naturals Honey Almond Protein Cereal, it's amazing!!! The cereal has 110 calories a serving, 10 grams of protein, 4 g of fiber!

My 6 yo son and I make these using a mix of chocolate cheerios and banana-nut cheerios. They are also really good using just the banana-nut cheerios and dried berries!

Kids love this. I add m&ms for color or sprinkles. Also chocolate and banana cheerios go well in this recipe

 Christine (Florida) says:
An alternative is to try the different flavors of Cheerios and add dried fruit. My five yr old just loves Chocolate Cheerios with dried bananas (1 c). It is also easier to cut them while they're warm.

I made this with fruity pebbles and my daughter loves them.... We have also tried Cheerios and reeses puffs cereal, all work great. You can use any kind of cereal you want!

 Genevieve (British Columbia) says:
These tasted fine and good. Crunchy, sweet and delicious. But let's be real. This is not healthy at all. Refined flour, butter, and corn syrup and sugar (usually first 2 ingredients in marshmallows).

 Rachel (Tennessee) replies:
Thank you Genevieve for mentioning that they are not healthy I was just saying the same thing to my husband after reading the "healthy" comments. Then I was glad to get to your comment and see that someone also realized that yummy yes but healthy not so much.

 JT Beiser (Ontario) replies:
Genevieve and Rachel ... if you divide the recipe into 24 squares, per serving it's 59 calories, 2.5 g fat, 8 g carbohydrate, 0.6 g fibre, and 1 g protein. There's 1.2 g of sugar in each treat, which is barely 1/3 tsp. It ain't broccoli, but in the world of snack treats for kids, it's one of the better choices.

 LindaP (Wisconsin) replies:
That's right! Much less sugar and bad ingredients than most off the shelf snacks!

 Musiclistsarus (Michigan) replies:
There isn't any refined flour in Cheerios. They are made with whole grain oats. These are probably a little healthier than rice krispies treats, since Cheerios has a healthy dose of fiber and more protein than rice krispies.

This treat was very different and it was delicious.
