TORTE DE ALMENDRA (ORANGE ALMOND
CAKE)
 
1 1/4 c. all-purpose flour
1 c. sugar
1 1/2 tsp. baking powder
1/2 tsp. salt
3/4 c. milk
1/3 c. shortening
1 egg
2 tsp. grated orange peel
1/4 c. sliced almonds
1 tbsp. sugar
2 tsp. orange flavored liqueur

Heat oven to 350 degrees. Grease and flour round layer pan (9-inch) or square (8x8). Beat all ingredients except almonds, 1 tablespoon sugar, and the liqueur in large mixer bowl on low speed, scraping bowl constantly, 30 seconds. Beat on high, scraping bowl occasionally, 3 minutes.

Pour into pan; sprinkle with almonds. Bake until wooden pick inserted in center comes out clean, 40-45 minutes. Sprinkle with 1 tablespoon sugar and drizzle with liqueur. Cool 15 minutes, remove from pan, and cool completely.
