1 c. sugar
2 tbsp. butter
1 egg
1 1/2 c. flour
Pinch of salt
1 tsp. baking soda
1 c. dates
1 c. hot water
1 c. nuts
1 tsp. vanilla

Add hot water to dates, soda and butter; let cool. Sift flour, sugar and salt together. Beat egg and mix date mixture, flour, sugar and salt together. Add vanilla and nuts (also candied cherries if desired). Bake in greased and floured pan in a 325 degree oven over a pan of hot water for about 1 hour or until done.
