2 c. chopped dates
2 tsp. baking soda
2 c. boiling water
3 c. flour
1 tsp. cloves
1 tsp. cinnamon
Pinch of salt
1/2 c. shortening
2 c. sugar
2 eggs
1 c. chopped walnuts
1 c. chopped maraschino cherries

Pour boiling water over dates and soda. Let cool. Sift flour, cloves, cinnamon, and salt. Cream shortening, sugar and eggs. Add flour and date mixture alternately to the creamed mixture. Fold in walnuts and cherries. Bake in ungreased tube pan for 1 hour and 15 minutes at 350 degrees.
