JOHNNY APPLESEED BARS | |
1 c. plain flour 1/2 tsp. salt 1/2 tsp. baking powder 1 tsp. cinnamon 1 1/2 c. rolled oats (uncooked) 2 c. thinly sliced, or grated raw apples 1/4 c. nuts (optional) 2/3 c. brown sugar 1/2 c. butter, melted 1 egg 1 tsp. vanilla Mix and sift flour, salt, baking powder and cinnamon. Add rolled oats, sugar, shortening, egg and vanilla; beat about 2 minutes. Press half of dough in bottom of greased 9 inch square baking pan. Sprinkle with nuts and arrange apples over nuts. Roll remaining dough between 2 sheets of waxed paper to form 9 inch square. Remove top sheet of paper; place dough over filling. Remove other sheet of waxed paper and press lightly around edges. Bake at 350 degrees for 25 to 30 minutes. When cool, sprinkle confectioners' sugar. Cut in bars. 18 bars. HINT: Roll both parts of dough between wax paper, place in freezer for a few minutes for easy handling. |
