SPICE BARS 
1 1/2 c. shortening
2 c. sugar
3 eggs
4 c. flour
2 tsp. baking soda
1 tsp. cloves
1 tsp. ginger
1 tsp. salt
1 c. raisins, soaked and well drained
1/2 c. chopped nuts, if desired

Blend shortening, sugar and eggs. Add dry ingredients and mix well. Stir in raisins and nuts. Roll into 1-inch rolls the length of your cookie sheet or a bit shorter.

Place 2 or 3 rolls on your cookie sheet, leaving room for the rolls to flatten and spread. (It's easier to do this if you chill the dough a few minutes first.) Bake in 350 degree oven for about 15 minutes. We like to glaze them (powdered sugar and milk or water - your preference).
