CHOCOLATE CHIP-DATE-NUT CAKE 
1 c. dates, chopped
1 c. plus 3 tbsp. hot water
1/2 c. chopped nuts
1 tsp. baking soda
2 c. flour
1 tbsp. cocoa
1 tsp. vanilla
1 c. sugar
1 c. shortening
1/2 tsp. salt
2 eggs
1 c. chocolate chips

Add soda to dates and water. Set aside. Cream sugar and shortening. Add dates and eggs, beat well. Add dry ingredients and vanilla. Beat again, then add 1/2 cup of chips and nuts.

Pour into greased, floured pan. Then add rest of chips to top of cake. This is moist cake and needs no frosting. Bake at 350 degrees for 30-40 minutes.
