SWEET BREAD AND BUTTER PICKLES 
Slice very thin 1 gallon of firm cucumbers, 2 seeded green peppers and skin 8 small white onions. Sprinkle with 2 teaspoons of alum and cover with crushed ice in layers with 1/2 cup of salt divided between the layers. Weight down and place in refrigerator for 3 hours. Drain.

Make a syrup of 5 cups of vinegar, 5 cups of sugar, 1 1/2 teaspoons turmeric, 1/2 teaspoon ground cloves, 2 teaspoons mustard seed and 1 teaspoon celery seed. Add vegetables, heat them slowly with very little stirring. Scald, do not boil them. Place in sterilized jars and seal at once.
