NANA'S DATE COCONUT BALLS 
1/4 c. butter
1 c. brown sugar
1 lb. cut up dates
1 egg, beaten
3 c. crisp rice cereal
1 tsp. vanilla
Fine coconut, ground nuts or sugar

Melt butter in frying pan. Add sugar, dates and egg. Cook until dates are soft, stirring frequently. Set aside to cool at least 10 minutes. Fold in cereal and vanilla.

Form into balls (walnut sized) and roll in coconut, nuts or sugar. (If it becomes too cool to make balls, stir over low heat for a few minutes.) Put on wax paper until cool and set.
