CRISP PICKLES 
7 lbs. sliced cucumbers
2 c. slack lime
1 or 2 c. salt
3 tbsp. alum
2 qts. vinegar
8 c. sugar
1/3 box mixed spices

Soak cucumbers overnight in water to which 2 cups of slack lime has been added. Wash off lime the next morning. Then soak 4 hours in salt water (1 or 2 cups salt). Then soak 2 hours in clear, cold water. Drain this off and bring to a boil in 3 tbsp. of alum water.

Mix 2 quarts vinegar with 8 cups sugar, 1/3 box mixed spices. Put cucumbers in this mixture and boil 30 minutes. Pack in jars and seal.
