SPICED ORANGE & APPLE SLICES 
2 med. oranges
1 1/4 c. water
1/2 c. vinegar
2 c. sugar
2 sticks whole cinnamon
15 whole cloves
2 firm apples, unpeeled

Cover oranges with water and boil until just tender, about 20 minutes; drain and cut in eighths. Combine the water, vinegar, sugar and spices in a saucepan. Bring to boiling and cook 5 minutes. Add the oranges and bring again to boiling. Reduce heat and simmer about 15 minutes. Cut apples in eighths and remove cores. Add them to the vinegar mixture and simmer 5 minutes. (If the apples are very hard, cook a couple of minutes longer.) Apple slices should be just barely tender, not mushy. Seal in hot sterilized jars. Makes about 1 1/2 pints.
