GERMAN STYLE CARROTS 
5 to 6 carrots
1 tbsp. shortening (oil - not butter)
1 med. onion, sliced into rings
1 to 2 tbsp. white sugar
salt & pepper to taste
1/4 tsp. dried marjoram, savory, dill or oregano - or combination

Put shortening in a saucepan or fry pan. Fill almost to the top with sliced carrots. Slice a medium onion over top. Add sugar, salt, pepper and herbs. Simmer for about 20 minutes. Stir occasionally. DO NOT ADD WATER. If necessary, add a small amount of shortening.
