CHOCOLATE-OATMEAL COOKIES 
1/2 c. shortening
1 c. sugar
1 egg
2 (1 oz.) squares unsweetened chocolate, melted & cooled
1 tsp. vanilla
1/2 tsp. rum flavoring
1 c. flour
1/2 tsp. baking soda
1 c. quick cooking rolled oats
1/2 c. chopped pecans

Cream shortening and sugar; beat in egg. Blend in chocolate flavorings and 2 tablespoons water. Mix flour with soda and 1/2 teaspoon salt. Stir into creamed mixture. Stir in oats and nuts. Form into 1" balls. Place 2" apart on greased cookie sheet. Flatten with sugared bottom of tumbler. Bake at 350 degrees for 10 to 12 minutes. Makes 4 dozen.
