2 1/2 c. flour
2 c. brown sugar
1/2 tsp. salt
2/3 c. shortening
2 tsp. baking powder
1/2 tsp. baking soda
1/2 tsp. cinnamon
1/2 tsp. nutmeg
1 c. sour milk
2 well beaten eggs

Mix flour, brown sugar, salt and shortening to fine crumbs in a mixing bowl. Remove 1/2 cup to sprinkle on top. To remaining crumbs add baking powder, soda and spices, mixing thoroughly. Add milk and eggs, stirring until smooth.

Place in 2 (8 inch) layer cake pans. Sprinkle with reserved crumbs. Bake at 375 degrees for 15 to 20 minutes.
