OVERSEAS FUDGE
1 1/4 sticks butter
4 1/2 cups sugar
1 (12 oz.) can evaporated milk
1 tbsp. vanilla
3 (6 oz. ea.) pkgs. chocolate bits
1 (8 oz.) jar marshmallow fluff
1 1/2 cups nutmeats

Melt butter, add sugar and milk. Bring to slow boil and boil about 12 minutes, stirring occasionally, until you can form a soft ball when dropped in cold water (234-240°F on a candy thermometer). Remove from heat and add chocolate bits, fluff, vanilla and nuts. Stir until this is well blended and then pour into greased pan (or pans) to cool.

Cooks Note: Use of a candy thermometer is recommended.

Makes almost 5 pounds of fudge.

Does anyone know the history behind this recipe? Was it used to mail fudge to service men overseas during the war?
