MR. SAM'S APPLE DUMPLINGS 
1 1/2 c. sugar
1 1/2 c. water
1/4 tsp. cinnamon
1/4 tsp. nutmeg
3 tbsp. butter
2 c. flour, sifted
2 tsp. baking powder
1 tsp. salt
2 1/3 c. shortening
1/2 c. milk
6 med. whole apples, pared & cored
Cinnamon, nutmeg and sugar
Butter, softened

Combine sugar, water, cinnamon, nutmeg; bring to a boil. Add butter. Set aside. Sift flour, baking powder and salt; cut in shortening. Add milk all at once and stir until moistened. On floured board, roll 1/8 inch thick to 12 x 18 inch rectangle. Cut into 6 inch squares. Place 1 apple in each square. Sprinkle generously with additional cinnamon, sugar and nutmeg. Dot with butter. Moisten edges of squares; fold corners to center and pinch edges together. Place 1 inch apart in ungreased 7 x 11 inch baking dish. Pour warm syrup over and sprinkle with sugar. Bake at 375 degrees for 35 minutes or until apples are done. Serve warm with cream, whipped cream or ice cream. Serves 6.
