APPLE DUMPLINGS 
1 c. sugar
1 c. water
1/8 tsp. cinnamon
1/8 tsp. nutmeg
2 drops red food coloring
2 tbsp. butter
2 c. flour
2 tsp. baking powder
1 tsp. salt
2/3 c. shortening
1/2 c. milk
8 whole apples

Pare, core and slice apples. Combine sugar, water, cinnamon, nutmeg and food coloring in saucepan and bring to a boil. Add butter to hot syrup. Sift together flour, baking powder and salt. Cut in shortening. Add milk all at once and stir until flour is just moistened.

Roll dough 1/4" thick on lightly floured surface, cut with pastry wheel or knife into 6" squares. Place 1 whole apple or a mound of the sliced apples in the center of each square.

Place dumplings 1" apart in greased 9"x11" baking dish. Pour syrup over dumplings and sprinkle with sugar. Put cinnamon candy or currant jelly on top of each.

Bake at 375 degrees for about 35 minutes. Sprinkle each apple or slices generously with sugar, cinnamon and nutmeg and dot with butter. Moisten edge of pastry square and fold corners to center and pinch. Serve hot with rich cream.
