INDIAN SALVE RECIPE
4 oz. yellow bees wax
4 oz. dark chunk resin
8 oz. pure lard (no salt)
1 oz. oil of spike (dark preferred)

Heat, not boil, the first 3 ingredients. Stir well to mix. Cool. While still warm, add the oil of spike, mix thoroughly.

NOTE: This recipe was handed down to my paternal Great Great Grandmother by the Indians who were very good to them. A notation said it was very good for infections. The date would have been around 1800.

Hi, These are the exact ingredients in a salve my grandmother used to make except she used powdered rosin. When I made it I obviously did something wrong as my salve turned out about the color of the bees wax. Possibly because the rosin was not dark. Can you tell me where I might obtain the oil of spike? Is it the same thing as oil of lavender. Thank you, Linda

Any idea of where I can get the dark chunk resin (is this pipe remains?) and oil of spike I'm sure this is what we used when I was a small child and it worked very well and is natural. Thanks a bunch

 Linda (Yukon Territory) says:
The dark chunk resin is collected from a tree.

This recipe has been in my family for 3 over generations. The color has nothing to do with the results of the salve.
