DUMPLINGS 
1 c. flour
1/2 tsp. baking powder
1/4 c. buttermilk
2 tbsp. fat
1/2 tsp. salt
1/8 tsp. baking soda
1 egg

Sift flour with other dry ingredients. Cut shortening into flour mixture. Add beaten egg and buttermilk. Use additional flour for kneading and knead dough thoroughly. Roll thin on bread or pastry cloth. Use plenty of flour on board. Let stand two or three hours. When ready to cook dumplings, heat broth to boiling. Cut dough in 1 x 3 inch strips. Add a strip at a time to gently boiling broth. From time to time, still adding, push dumplings down in liquid. Cover vessel. Boil gently for 20 minutes.
