GRANDMOTHER ADA'S GINGER BREAD 
1/2 c. sugar
1 1/2 tsp. baking soda
1/2 c. butter
1 tsp. cinnamon, cloves & ginger
1/2 tsp. salt
1 c. molasses
1 egg
2 1/2 c. flour
1 c. hot water

Cream butter and sugar. Add egg and molasses. Add dry ingredients that have been sifted together. Add hot water, beat until smooth. Bake at 350 degrees for 35 to 40 minutes. Nut topping can be added on top before baking if desired.

NUT TOPPING:

1/4 c. flour
1/2 c. brown sugar
1 tsp. cinnamon
1/2 c. nuts
1/2 tsp. grated lemon rind

Mix all and add 1/4 cup melted butter. Mix again.
