PRESIDENT E.'S FAVORITE DEVIL'S
FOOD CAKE
 
1/2 c. butter
3 eggs, separated
2 1/2 c. sifted flour
2/3 c. cocoa dissolved in 1/2 c. hot water
2 c. sugar
1 c. sour milk
1 tsp. baking soda
1 tsp. baking powder, rounded
1/4 tsp. salt
1 tsp. vanilla

Combine flour, soda, baking powder and salt. Cream butter - slowly beat in sugar. Add egg yolks and vanilla. Stir in cocoa and water. Add flour mixture alternately with milk. Fold in stiffly beaten egg whites. Pour in 2 greased and floured round cake pans. Bake 25 minutes at 375 degrees.

FROSTING:

2 egg whites
1 1/2 c. sugar
5 tbsp. cold water
1/2 tsp. cream of tartar
1 tsp. vanilla

Combine first 4 ingredients and cook over boiling water, beating all the time for 7 minutes. Add vanilla.
