GENELL'S OLD FASHIONED APPLE -
ORANGE CAKE
 
1 c. shortening
2 c. sugar
3 c. sifted cake flour
3 tsp. baking powder
1 tsp. salt
4 eggs
1 1/2 c. milk, use more if needed for consistency
1 tsp. vanilla

Add baking powder and salt to flour before sifting.

Cream shortening, sugar and eggs. Gradually add milk, flour and vanilla; mix well (3-5 minutes). Pour in 4 round cake pans and bake at 350 degrees until brown (30-35 minutes). Cool layers and stack with mixture below.

Blend: 2 apples, peeled 1 c. sugar

Spread on cooled layers.

ICING:

1/4 c. butter
2-3 c. powdered sugar
Enough milk for stiff icing (approx. 1/4-1/2 c.)

Spread on stacked cake. May use cake recipe for pound cake. For lemon pound cake, use 1/2 teaspoon vanilla and 1 teaspoon lemon flavoring.
