HUSH PUPPIES 
1 egg, beaten
1 c. buttermilk
1/2 c. onion, finely chopped
1/4 c. water
1 3/4 c. cornmeal
1/2 c. all-purpose flour
1 tbsp. sugar
2 tsp. baking powder
1 tsp. salt
1/2 tsp. baking soda
Shortening (for deep-fat frying)

Blend egg, buttermilk, onion and water; set aside. Combine cornmeal, flour, sugar, baking powder, salt and baking soda. Add egg mixture to cornmeal mixture; stir just until moistened. Drop batter by tablespoons into deep hot fat. Fry until golden brown. Drain on a paper towel.
