DATE SQUARES 
1 pkg. dates, cut fine
1 c. boiling water
1/2 c. brown sugar
1/2 c. orange juice

Cook dates, water and brown sugar until thick. Add orange juice. Let cool.

CRUMB MIXTURE:

1 c. shortening
2 c. flour
1 c. rolled oats
1 c. brown sugar

Work with pastry blender or 2 knives until mixture resembles fine bread crumbs. Put half into a greased 9 x 15 inch pan. Pat in pan firmly. Add date filling and cover with remaining mixture. Bake at 350 degrees for 30 minutes.
