APPLE PIE
Pastry for 9-inch pie
2 1/2 lb. apples
3/4 c. sugar
2 tbsp. butter
1/2 tsp. cinnamon
1/8 tsp. cloves
1/4 tsp. nutmeg
1/8 tsp. allspice

Place pastry in pie plate. Heap plate with thinly sliced peeled apples. Spread sugar evenly over apples; spread spices evenly on sugar. Dot with butter. Sprinkle with a little salt. Cover with top crust and seal edges. Sprinkle top crust with a little water and sugar mixed together. Bake at 350 degrees for 1 hour or until golden brown.

HINTS: This is not a sweet apple pie, but rather one you would eat for breakfast or have ice cream on top of. If you prefer, you may brush top with milk. Make a few holes in top of pie with fork to allow steam to get out.

How sweet and how sturdy this pie is depends on the type of apples you use. I love McIntosh. The only variety I would not recommend is Delicious.

A quick easy crust with a homemade taste can be made from a package of pie crust mix and a few tablespoons of orange juice. Simply replace the water in the directions with orange juice.
