SPICE CAKE 
1 1/2 c. butter or Crisco
1 1/2 c. sugar
2 eggs
1 c. sour milk
1 1/2 tsp. baking soda
2 tsp. cinnamon
2 tsp. allspice
2 tsp. cloves
1 tsp. nutmeg
1 c. raisins
2 1/2 c. flour
1 c. nuts

Cream butter and sugar. Add eggs; beat well. Dissolve soda in sour milk. Mix all spices in flour; add to butter and sugar mixture. Wash raisins and put in pan in oven until they are warm. Add to mixture. Cool in layers.

CARAMEL FILLING:

1/2 c. sugar, browned
2 1/2 c. sugar
1 c. milk
Pinch of soda

Brown 1/2 cup sugar in large pan, while 2 1/2 cups sugar, soda and milk come to a good boil. Then pour rapidly into browned sugar. Let boil while stirring to soft ball stage. Remove from fire; add lump of butter and 2 teaspoons vanilla. Stir until it begins to thicken.
