2 c. brown sugar
2 eggs
1 c. shortening
1 1/2 tsp. baking soda mixed with 1/2 c. warm water
1 tsp. vanilla
4 c. flour

FILLING:

1 pkg. dates
1 c. water
1 c. sugar
1/2 c. chopped nuts
2 tbsp. flour
Dab of butter
1 tsp. vanilla

Mix ingredients for cookies. Combine filling ingredients together and cook until thick. Grease cookie sheet. Drop small amount of cookie batter into cookie sheet. Make a small indentation in each cookie using back of spoon. Fill with a small amount of filling and cover with more cookie batter. Bake at 350 degrees for 10 to 12 minutes.
