OLD ENGLISH BARS 
1 c. brown sugar
1/2 c. butter
1 egg
1 tsp. Karo syrup (light or dark)
1/2 c. cold coffee with 1/2 tsp. baking soda dissolved in it
1/2 c. raisins
1/2 tsp. baking powder
1 3/4 c. flour
1/2 tsp. each: cinnamon, nutmeg and cloves

(Plump them in a small amount of boiling water, drain and cool).

Spread batter in greased and floured jelly roll pan. Bake 35 to 40 minutes.

FROSTING FOR OLD ENGLISH BARS:

1 c. brown sugar
6 tbsp. milk or cream
1 tbsp. butter

Cook until it bubbles. Then stir in 1/2 box powdered sugar and spread quickly over cooled cookies. Cut into bars.
