SCALLOPED ONIONS 
Casserole:

6 large onions, peeled and sliced
1/2 tsp. salt
1/2 tsp. pepper
Butter to taste
Bread crumbs

Slice onions. Cook until almost done. Butter a baking pan. Layer onions with bread crumbs, salt, and pepper. Pour white sauce over onions and crumbs. Repeat layering until pan is full ending with bread crumbs. Dot with butter.

Bake in moderate oven for 20 to 30 minutes.

White Sauce:

2 tbsp. butter
2 tbsp. flour
1/4 tsp. pepper
1/2 tsp. salt
1 c. milk

Melt butter; blend in flour, salt, and pepper. Stir over low heat until smooth and bubbly. Remove from heat. Stir in milk. Heat to boiling for one minute, stirring constantly.
