OLD-FASHIONED CORN BREAD 
1 c. corn meal
1 c. buttermilk
1/2 tsp. salt
1/2 tsp. baking soda
1 egg
3 tbsp. melted shortening or bacon drippings

Do not sift meal. Mix all ingredients together and bake in greased pan or skillet at 400 degrees for 35-40 minutes. This is a 200 year old recipe.

This was my Great Grandmother's recipe that she got from her Mother. I assumed it was civil war vintage. She did it in two ten inch skillets at 450°F. She preheated the skillets with oil in them. When the oil starts to smoke, it's time to pour in the batter. I use this recipe a lot and it's always good.
