CHOCOLATE FUDGE CAKE (EA) 
4 tbsp. shortening
2 c. sugar
2 eggs
3 sq. chocolate, melted
2 c. cake flour
3 tsp. baking powder
1/2 tsp. salt
1 1/2 c. milk
1 tsp. vanilla

Cream shortening. Add 1 1/2 cups sugar, gradually, then well beaten egg yolks and cream all together thoroughly. Blend in melted chocolate. Sift flour, baking powder and salt together and add to creamed mixture alternately with milk. Beat just enough to make batter smooth. Blend in vanilla.

Make a meringue by beating egg whites until stiff enough to hold a peak, then gradually beating into them the remaining 1/2 cup sugar. Fold this meringue into batter. Pour into well greased and floured layer pans and bake 25 minutes in moderate oven, 350 degrees.
