CAROL'S BUTTERSCOTCH BROWNIES 
1 c. flour, sifted
1/2 tsp. baking powder
1/3 tsp. baking soda
1/2 tsp. salt
1/3 c. butter or shortening
1 c. brown sugar
1 egg, slightly beaten
1 tsp. vanilla
1/2 c. nuts, chopped
1/2 c. chocolate chips

Mix flour, baking powder, soda, salt and nuts. Set aside. Melt shortening and add brown sugar. Mix well and cool slightly. Add egg, vanilla and flour mixture. Mix well. Spread in 8 x 8 inch square pan. Sprinkle chips (chocolate) over top. Bake at 350 degrees for 20 to 25 minutes. Don't overbake. Cut in squares (I always double this recipe and bake in a 9 x 13 inch pan and then it takes 30 to 35 minutes to bake.)
