1 c. shortening
4 eggs
4 c. applesauce
3 c. sugar
4 c. flour
2 tbsp. cocoa
1 tbsp. baking soda
2 tsp. cinnamon
2 tsp. nutmeg
2 tsp. cloves

Topping:

1 c. chocolate chips
1 c. nuts, chopped
1/4 c. brown sugar

Sift together flour, cocoa, soda, cinnamon, nutmeg and cloves. Cream shortening, sugar, eggs and applesauce. Add dry ingredients. Pour into a big pan. Add topping.

Bake 1 hour and 15 minutes at 350°F.

If you want a 9 x 13 pan, make half the recipe.
